Many years ago I beckoned to my little niece, to come to me. She replied “I am busy uncle”. I laughed so much I could hardly breathe. I wondered what a 3 year old girl was doing that was that important as to tell me she was busy. She was probably messing up the whole living room and spilling drinks all over the place. However, in her mind. She was busy! In her little mind she was mistaking movement for achievement!
And how many of us mistake movement for achievement! It is easy to be misled into thinking that being busy is equal to making progress! The main question is “Busy doing what?”
It is very important for us to learn to separate the “majors” from the “minors”. A lot of people don’t do well simply because they major in minor things. One common trait of every successful person is their ability to focus time and energy and time intelligently! They focus on what is important! They don’t waste major time on minor things.
Let me reiterate, If something is draining too much of your time and energy, do something about it! However, if something feeds you and helps secure your future, do a little bit more of it!
Jim Connolly once said that, our job then, is twofold. 1. We need to discover what the key activities are that produce the highest return for us. 2. We need to ensure that whatever happens, these activities get done before we start on lower value tasks.
Failing to invest your time correctly, means you run the risk of mistaking movement for progress.
Time is of great essence. How we treat this precious and most valuable gift of all tells a lot about our life. It reveals what is important to us and it can give us an insight into how happy and successful we will become in life. Time is expensive. When you spend a day you have one less day to spend. So make sure you spend each one wisely. Don’t waste it, kill it or spend it! You will be better for it if you invest it!
We can no more afford to spend major time on minor things than we can to spend minor time on major things. Ask yourself the question: Is this the best use of my time right now?
If the answer is yes, then carry on. If the answer is no, then go and get to work on a more worthy use of your valuable time. So many people waste vital time on what does not add value to their lives, they are the ones who knows who the new neighbours are, they know who is dating who and who and they know who is owing who! They know whose daughter is on what drug etc. They never spend time on what could better their lives or what could edify their fellow men! Majors in Minors! Its time to take time more seriously and focus on the things that will bring us success!
Have a great evening and see you at the top!
